Hoezo in KINO

“What’s more beautiful than life? Maybe, the reflections of life: a book, quartet, a film, painting, sculpture.” We kick off the Los Angeles set Underbelly series with a hang-out movie by French director Jacques Demy of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg fame. It’s exactly that French, Nouvelle Vague trained eye that captures the American disillusionment with the bygone decade of civil strife and escalating foreign war so perfectly, here. George, a rudderless twentysomething, in danger of getting his car impounded, getting kicked out by his ladyfriend and only a week away from being drafted to Vietnam, is “what now?” personified in a meandering movie that bookends the sentiments of the hopeful Sixties to make way for the more cynical Seventies, the era of Hollywood’s much needed reinvigeration and welcome return to relevance. English language without subtitles.

Storyline

While trying to raise money to prevent his car from being repossessed, George is attracted to Lola, a Frenchwoman who works in a “model shop”, an establishment that rents out beautiful pin-up models to photographers. George spends his last twelve dollars to photograph Lola, and discovers that she is as unhappy as he.
