Metropolis (1927)

Hoezo in KINO

This visionary German expressionist masterpiece was the first film ever to depict intelligent machines, and would basically start the science fiction film genre. Its director Fritz Lang (and scriptwriter / then-wife Thea von Harbou) created a dystopia in which the upper classes rule the lower ones, making use of a machine technology only they had the power to build. Sound familiar? Google, Meta and Microsoft might not be that far off – let’s hope our future is not as hallucinatory as this beautiful dark spell of a movie. Recently restored, and screened with a musical score by Gottfried Huppertz and German title cards with English subtitles.
