Honey, they didn’t burn down Rome in one day – you got to keep pluggin’.” This oddly charming “BOSUD” (biopic of someone undeserving) bagged two Oscars in its time (Best Actress, Mary Steenburgen and Best Screenplay, Bo Goldman) and despite being one of PTA’s favourite movies, remains criminally underseen. The film is based on the true story of Melvin, a moderately likeable loser who has a life-changing chance desert intermezzo with aging billionaire playboy and director, Howard Hughes. The film has a certain indefinable quality, a life-affirming humanity seldom captured in a mundane setting like Melvin’s. Even with the fantastical plot twist intervening. A true hidden gem.
