“Oh, there’s a big difference, Mrs. de Marco. The mob is run by murdering, thieving, lying, cheating psychopaths. We work for the President of the United States of America.” Michelle Pfeiffer delivers one her best performances (nothing tops Catwoman) as the freshly widowed mob wife of a mobster that soon finds herself and her young son in peril when the head of the family wants to move in on her turf, so to speak. Demme’s catalogue bursts with great female roles that are layered and emotional yet contain agency and power (of course, Clarice Starling comes to mind). Mix in great supporting turns from Dean Stockwell, Alec Baldwin, Joan Cusack, Mercedes Ruehl and Matthew Modine’s FBI agent (sporting a Wallace & Gromit dressing device that still boggles the mind), and you have yourself a great time at the movies. English language without subtitles.

Storyline

Angela de Marco is fed up with her gangster husband’s line of work and wants no part of the crime world. When her husband is killed for having an affair with the mistress of mob boss Tony “The Tiger” Russo, Angela and her son depart for New York City to make a fresh start. Unfortunately, Tony has set his sights upon Angela – and so has an undercover FBI agent looking to use her to bust Tony.
