Hoezo in KINO

One of Italy’s most controversial filmmakers, Pier Paolo Pasolini’s second feature stars Anna Magnani, one of the biggest names in Italian cinema. ‘Mamma Roma’ is a prostitute who’s saved up enough to move to Rome and make a respectable living for her and her son. Made in the postwar era of booming economic reforms, Pasolini’s themes are in stark contrast to this fact. His main characters are thieves, pimps and prostitutes who live in the outskirts of Rome, far away from ‘La Dolce Vita’ and struggling to make ends meet. As with a lot of his films, this film stirred up controversy and even got him into a fight with young fascists who showed up to protest during the premiere. Screens in KINO in a beautifully digitally restored version for the film’s 60th anniversary.
