Magnolia (1999)

Hoezo in KINO

“Sometimes people need a little help. Sometimes people need to be forgiven. And sometimes they need to go to jail.” PTA’s kaleidoscopic meditation on family, facing past sins and seeking redemption, feels like his ambition-fueled calling card to the Hollywood writer/director community with a clear message: “I’m here, and I’m here to stay. Deal with it.” The film was released in the infamous year of 1999, a sea change for American cinema with smart, original outings backed by studios like Being John Malkovich, Fight Club and even The Matrix, giving moviegoers new names to remember and look out for. PTA mentioned that if he would make Magnolia today, he would leave out the ‘Wise Up’ sequence, which is yet again proof we should prevent directors from tinkering with their past projects. English language without subtitles. The screenings are presented with an intermission.
