Hoezo in KINO

At the beginning of The Secret Agent, director Kleber Mendonça Filho gives an ode to his Brazilian film heroes with a short photo reel. One prominently featured picture is that of Héctor Babenco’s Lúcio Flávio: o Passageiro da Agonia, from 1977, not incidentally the year Filho’s film is set. The chronicle about the legendary bank robber was a touchstone in search of raw authenticity, period correctness and the narrative structure of unfolding an intricate story through personal interactions. We’re really excited to screen Lúcio Flávio in KINO as this classic of Brazilian cinema is barely known outside of its country and is a hard hitting depiction of Flàvio’s gang evading the corrupt police agents hunting him down when they’re not taking his bribes. Portuguese language with English subtitles.

Storyline

Story of Brazilian bank-robber Lúcio Flávio, who fascinated some people in Rio de Janeiro during the 1970s for his bold robberies and spectacular escapes, and also because he was thought to be intelligent and “politically aware”. Before dying, he disclosed a network of corruption in Brazilian Police, and its involvement with the infamous “Death Squad” of the time, a group of policemen who went about killing criminals without giving them a fair trial.
