“I need three wing-back chairs from the bar. I need a bottle of Everclear. I need plenty of grease from the kitchen. And I want you to meet me on the eighth hole by the sand trap, dos minutos. Pronto. Apurarse.” PTA’s ode to his childhood’s San Fernando Valley stomping grounds starts out with an almost verbatim ode to the bathroom bomb scene in George Lucas’ American Graffiti, setting the stage for a unique coming of age film. The story centers around Gary, played by Cooper Hoffman, the son of deceased long-time collaborator and dear friend of PTA, Philip Seymour. The young buck is still a teen but looks and acts older, which gets him in all sorts of trials and tribulations, not in the least with the much older Alana (played with great sincerity by musician Alana Haim). With a great soundtrack and characters played by people close to PTA, this might be his most personal film and you can feel the love shine through in every shot. English language without subtitles.
