Special Agnès Varda Classic

Les plages d’Agnès (2008)

Hoezo in KINO

Varda walks backwards through her own life, arranging memories like seashells on a beach. At once playful and melancholic, this all-telling film reinvents autobiography as collage. With its mix of memory, performance and reflection, the film belongs to the tradition of essay cinema—where personal history and art merge into something inventive and profound. Varda shows that even late in life, her curiosity never dimmed. There are screenings with Dutch and screenings with English subtitles.

Storyline

Filmmaking icon Agnès Varda, the award-winning director regarded by many as the grandmother of the French new wave, turns the camera on herself with this unique autobiographical documentary. Composed of film excerpts and elaborate dramatic re-creations, Varda’s self-portrait recounts the highs and lows of her professional career, the many friendships that affected her life and her longtime marriage to cinematic giant Jacques Demy.
