La maman et la putain (1973)

Hoezo in KINO

La maman et la putain captures the disillusionment after the 1968 student revolts and mass strikes with apt Parisian blasé and answers the existential question of “what now?” resolutely with: sexual escapism. The story is based on the real life relationship vicissitudes of director Jean Eustache, concerning an unemployed young man wandering around the French capital simultaneously unsuccessfully rekindling a past relationship while also embarking on a ménage à trois with his current fling and a young nurse. As you do. Besides the escapades, this film brilliantly captures life in all its mundanity and contrary to its loose look and feel (Cassavetes oeuvre comes to mind) Eustache didn’t allow any improvisation and scripted the entire 210 minutes with the utmost care. We welcome you to enjoy this cinematic time capsule on our biggest screen, with an intermission. French language with English subtitles.
