Hoezo in KINO

Mathieu Kassovitz brooding black and white banlieue tale hit moviegoers like a ton of bricks back in ’95 and became the cinematic patron of a disenfranchised community within the European experience. The film portrays three friends stuck in the endless highrises of the Paris suburbs, seemingly worlds away (or really just a short train ride) from the glitz of the capital, constantly hounded by police in their endeavors to make a franc. In equal parts confronting, hilarious and mesmerizing, La haine has lost none of its punch or relevance since and is back in cinema’s for a limited time only.

Storyline

Aimlessly passing their days in the concrete environs of their dead-end suburbia, Vinz (Vincent Cassel), Hubert (Hubert Koundé), and Saïd (Saïd Taghmaoui)–a Jew, an African, and an Arab–give human faces to France’s immigrant populations, their bristling resentment at their marginalization slowly simmering until it reaches a climactic boiling point.
