Special Classic Paul Thomas Anderson

Inherent Vice (2014)

Hoezo in KINO

“Chotto, Kenichiro, Dozo! Motto panukeiku… motto panukeiku! Motto panukeiku!” Before Inherent Vice, no soul had dared to adapt the discombobulating prose of Thomas Pynchon to the big screen, and for good reason. PTA’s private eye period piece is not a casual watch as its intricate yarn threading includes an ever expanding amount of characters and strange side stories that may or may not bring the protagonist closer to the truth. Joaquin Phoenix plays Larry “Doc” Sportello, a perma-buzzed detective looking for a vanished old girlfriend and naturally biting off more than he can chew. PTA’s love for 1970’s cinema, especially Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye, is very evident. The fantastic supporting cast sees many Hollywood royalty pop up in vignette-like scenes and the film works as an intricate mystery as well as a hangout movie brimming with a homesick longing for a bygone era. English language with Dutch subtitles.
