Hoezo in KINO

Even more urgent now than when it debuted: The Last Winter, a climate horror flick in which the polar caps are melting. The film premiered in Rotterdam in 2006 – filmmaker Larry Fessenden wasn’t present, as he refuses to fly.

Storyline

In the film, situated at a remote drilling research centre in northern Alaska, we see two all-too-familiar opposites collide. James Hoffman (James LeGros) is sent up north to measure the environmental impact of oil drilling in the area, whereas Ed Pollack (Ron Perlman) is a rowdy oiler who just wants to get the job done. Their crew members turn on each other and start to mysteriously disappear, while it is well into winter and the temperatures just won’t drop. It’s John Carpenter’s The Thing meets Ridley Scott’s Alien in current times: the essence of the horror genre – ignoring warnings – acquires a global significance with The Last Winter.
