Hoezo in KINO

Never has communist propaganda looked so utterly ravishing as in I Am Cuba, a film criminally underseen for decades as the result of a rights claim between Cuba and the USSR – two countries, one would assume, that should have the innate capacity to share. The film sports a sultry voiceover from the Caribbean island itself as four stories unfold about the downtrodden and repressed struggling to carve out an existence at ground level while the elite cavort inebriated and swimwear-clad on the lavish sunroofs of Havana. As with Kalatozov’s earlier work, the cinematography takes center stage with inimitable one-takers and avant la lettre drone shots that will have you reeling with baffled delight. We’re excited to screen this rare gem in a beautifully digital restoration. Spanish language with English subtitles.

Storyline

Four vignettes on the lives of the Cuban people in the pre-revolutionary era. In Havana, Maria is ashamed when a man she loves discovers how she makes a living. Pedro, an old farmer, discovers that the land he cultivates is being sold to an American company. A student sees his friends attacked by the police while they distribute leaflets supporting Fidel Castro. Finally, a peasant family is threatened by Batista’s army.
