In How To Shoot a Ghost, Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I’m Thinking of Ending Things) blends archival footage, street photography and performance into a 27 minutes dreamy cine-essay that stars Jessie Buckley. Cinematographer Michal Dymek’s lens perpetually dissolves the border between presence and absence, and the film’s central question – how do you know you truly lived? – lingers long after.
Kaufman asked upcoming Dutch composer Ella van der Woude (Armand, Alpha.) to with her score steer the emotion rather than merely accompany his film. This screening is accompanied by a Q&A with Ella van der Woude. Musicians: Ella van der Woude (piano, vocals), music editor Annelotte Coster (synth, vocals) & Hristo Goleminov (sax).

Storyline

Two newly dead young people meet in the streets of Athens, amid the pulsing cityscape and the ghosts of history. One a translator, the other a photographer, they were outsiders in life; in death they struggle with the residue of their longings and mistakes. They wander the city together, finding consolation in the difficult beauty of existence and its aftermath.
