“A lot of strange things happen in this world. Things you don’t know about in Grand Rapids. Things you don’t want to know about. Doors that shouldn’t be opened.” Paul Schrader’s ‘Lone Man on a Mission’ has become a sub-genre in itself, but was relatively fresh with only Taxi Driver (scripted by) released and 1977’s Rolling Thunder disowned by Schrader for the studio pulling punches with his intended ending. Hardcore has all the autobiographical hallmarks of Midwestern dogma set against a big city canvas of vice and sin. Here in the form of a father tracking down his young daughter who disappeared into the LA X-rated skin flick scene. George C. Scott delivers an iconic performance of a man that has to come to terms with the big bad world he’s been blocking out all his life. English language without subtitles.
