Special a 35mm presentation Paul Thomas Anderson

Hard Eight (1996)

Hoezo in KINO

“You know the first thing they should’ve taught you at hooker school? You get the money up front!” Anderson’s quiet but powerful debut is a Nevada-set neo-noir about apprenticeship and coming to terms with one’s obsoletion. Philip Baker Hall plays the veteran casino dweller literally picking up a down and out newcomer (John C. Reilly) to instill his knowledge and experience on. Even with his first film, PTA knew how to draw a crowd of talent, with great turns from the likes of Gwyneth Palthrow, Samuel L. Jackson and Philip Seymour Hoffman, in a melancholic first feature that not only predicts future greatness, but already contains it. English language without subtitles.
