Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

Hoezo in KINO

The most beautifully realized and devastating anti-war film ever made (animated or otherwise), returns to our screen to etch itself into the soul of a new generation of moviegoers. Director Isao Takahata (The Tale of Princess Kaguya, Only Yesterday) and fellow Ghibli studio Hayao Miyazaki both released their masterpieces in a double bill in 1988, as this film was preceded in Japanese cinemas by My Neighbour Totoro, at the time. Quite the emotional rollercoaster of a double bill. By focusing on the plight of fourteen year old Seita and his little cherubin sister Setsuko, all fake heroics and motivations of war are stripped away, leaving you with the plight of two innocent souls navigating the apocalypse of late WWII Japan fending for themselves.
