Gladiator (2000) – a 35mm presentation

Hoezo in KINO

“What we do in life, echoes in eternity.” Our favourite commander of the Felix legions won’t be returning for the upcoming sequel (we’re guessing here), so this is the perfect time to experience the original cinematic juggernaut of the ‘sword & sandal’ genre, and in 35mm. Ridley Scott’s unmatched world building, Crowe’s reluctant hero general/slave/gladiator and Phoenix’ smarmy nepo-baby emperor all shine in one of our favourite cinematic experiences enhanced even more by Hans Zimmer’s unabashedly dramatic score. We can only screen the print three times, so get those tickets early. English language with Dutch subtitles. Print provided by Eye Filmmuseum.

Storyline

In the year 180, the death of emperor Marcus Aurelius throws the Roman Empire into chaos. Maximus is one of the Roman army’s most capable and trusted generals and a key advisor to the emperor. As Marcus’ devious son Commodus ascends to the throne, Maximus is set to be executed. He escapes, but is captured by slave traders. Renamed Spaniard and forced to become a gladiator, Maximus must battle to the death with other men for the amusement of paying audiences.
