“I saw horrible things, horrible, horrible things while I lived there. It was truly inspiring.” David Lynch’s first foray into full length feature filmmaking reflected his anxiety caused by parenthood, poverty and living in the industrial hellscape known as Philadelphia. The film took several years to make as funds constantly ran out and production had to be halted several times. This meant that lead actor Jack Nance had to keep that hairdo intact for the duration because filming could continue at any moment. When the film was released in ’77 it was immediately embraced by underground directors like John Waters, becoming a midnight movie mainstay and Lynch’s ticket to the Big Time, some years later. English language with Dutch subtitles.
