The mother of all (anti) war films directed by maverick Francis Ford Coppola was an essential cinematic experience in forming our perception of film as an art from, and back in 2019 we were given an unlikely opportunity as a cinema to contribute in a small way to its monumental legacy as one of the all time greats. Together with the National Photo Museum we produced a short documentary about the Dutch war photographer Chas Gerretsen and the set photography during the production of the film, which was eventually included on the Final Cut blu-ray release, that same year. It has only made us revere this masterpiece even more and feel honored to be linked with its enduring legacy in this way. We are proud and excited to screen Apocalypse Now: Final Cut to celebrate our 10th anniversary, accompanied by our own Dutch Angle: Chas Gerretsen and Apocalypse Now. English language with Dutch subtitles.

Storyline

In de documentaire Dutch Angle: Chas Gerretsen & Apocalypse Now zijn nog niet eerder gepubliceerde setfoto’s te zien van de Nederlandse oorlogsfotograaf Chas Gerretsen, gemaakt tijdens de opnames van Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam-epos: Apocalypse Now uit 1979. Gerretsen werd in 1976 persoonlijk door Coppola uitgenodigd op de set van deze film op grond van zijn ervaringen als oorlogsfotograaf.

In Dutch Angle verkent de regisseur Baris Azman o.a. Gerretsens jeugd in Nederland, zijn werk in conflictgebieden als Chili, Cambodja en Vietnam en zijn relatie met Coppola, de cast & crew en toont hij meer dan honderd foto’s van o.a. Marlon Brando, Dennis Hopper, Martin Sheen en Scott Glenn. Het werk en verhaal van Chas Gerretsen werpt 40 jaar na de release van de beste oorlogsfilm ooit, een nieuw licht op de totstandkoming van Apocalypse Now met nog nooit eerder getoond beeld.
