Hoezo in KINO

Hardly the recipe for China’s biggest sleeper hit of 2026: a two-million-dollar budget, a mostly amateur cast and dialogue in Teochew, a dialect most Chinese viewers need subtitles for. A debt-ridden grandson heads to Bangkok looking for his ‘rich’ grandfather, but mostly finds letters. Via flashbacks to the 1950s, the comic treasure hunt tips into a tearjerker about migrants who sacrifice everything for each other. Come for the inheritance, stay for the heritage. Lan Hongchun sometimes cranks the melodrama to the max, but the warm images, newcomer Li Sitong and what those letters leave unsaid linger. Bring tissues. Shown in Teochew/Thai with English subtitles
