Coach to Vienna (1966)

Hoezo in KINO

This WWII potboiler has a fairytale quality to it as the entire film is contained in a dark forest with travelers by carriage beset by strangers along the road. A young Austrian soldier on the run from the Red Army forces a woman to help him and his wounded fellow to navigate the treacherous road to his country’s capital, all while the woman is planning revenge of her own. A dark tale told with restraint and beautiful camerawork, might be one of our favourite films in this retrospective and showcases the acting chops of Iva Janzurová. Mostly known for her work in comedies before this stark human drama that shows human’s capacity for both good and evil under the strains of war.
