Hoezo in KINO

Quentin Tarantino customized his 2003 Kill Bill release for the Japanese market with a title card dedicating his film to Kinji Fukasaku, who passed on earlier that year. His greatest and most shocking cinematic outing, Battle Royale, feels like it’s from the hand of an eager up-and-comer and not an established 70 year old director. The film was a profound sea change in the culture, not only combining brutal violence with searing satire, but also involving high school kids as the victims/protagonists while adding a game element to the narrative. This arguably created a template for The Hunger Games franchise, the Squid Game phenomena and melée gaming formats. As Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair screens in glorious 70mm, we’re very excited to bring back this modern classic in a fantastic digital restoration. Beware: we only screen it twice. Japanese language with English subtitles.
