“I’m drowning here, and you’re describing the water!” In his second collaboration with James L. Brooks, Nicholson again received an Academy Award for his troubles as the cantankerous, OCD riddled author and service industry terror looking for love in all the wrong places. It’s the trifecta of fantastically written characters (if aged somewhat problematically) with Nicholson being flanked by Helen Hunt’s caring single mom and Greg Kinnear’s understandably terrified gay neighbor, making up a wry comedy classic that hits all the right buttons. Because let’s be honest, what line beats “You make me want to be a better man”, in that setting? Exactly. English language with Dutch subtitles.
