Hoezo in KINO

The first and only feature film by Hu Bo (who tragically took his life shortly after completing it) is a work he not only directed, but also wrote and edited. Its nearly four-hour runtime is essential, allowing the audience to fully inhabit the despair, loneliness, and suffocating bleakness that define the four characters’ world. The drained, almost colorless palette reinforces the sense of a place where nothing grows, there is no purpose or opportunity, and escape feels impossible. The use of extended long takes and minimal editing deepens the film’s documentary-like quality and mirrors the characters’ isolation, making this a striking and unforgettable achievement in slow cinema and should be watched on the big screen.
