Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972)

Hoezo in KINO

Werner Herzog’s journey to the heart of darkness sports one of the all time best opening shots in cinema as a harbinger of doom. The title role of the hateful and greed-motivated conquistador, punishing his suffering subjects through the thick jungle in search of El Dorado, was a perfect fit for the completely brilliant and utterly insane Klaus Kinski. A man Herzog kept collaborating with throughout his career, a habit that can only be diagnosed as pure self-flagellation, but with mesmerizing cinematic results. German language with English subtitles.
