Hoezo in KINO

A Romeo and Juliet-like love story between two people from very different social classes, the film is set against the backdrop of early-’90s Hong Kong, with motorcycle rides, neon-lit streets and beautiful camerawork. Andy Lau stars as Wah Dee, a low-level Triad member who falls for Jo jo (Chien-Lien Wu), a young woman from a wealthy background. This directorial debut by Benny Chan (Who Am I?) launched Andy Lau as the quintessential romantic action hero, so much so that his character’s name, Wah Dee, became a nickname for Lau himself. A Moment of Romance has just the right balance between romance, action and melodrama. And with Johnnie To and Ringo Lam behind the production, with Lam also credited for the story, you know you’re in for a good time.

Join us on Friday 9 October for the opening of Hong Kong Stories: Lives in Transition. All tickets include a welcome drink. We’re very proud and excited to present a new exhibition in our foyer, featuring six of Greg Girard’s photographs of Hong Kong from the 1980s, accompanying the film programme. The exhibition opens at 16:00, followed by A Moment of Romance (1990) at 18:45.

Storyline

Getaway driver Wah Dee is forced to kidnap a young girl in order to elude the police. Their accidental meeting sets the wheels of love in motion until the girl’s parent plan to end the relationship by enrolling her in a school overseas. Alternating between stylized action set pieces and quiet depictions of the developing love affair, producer Johnny To and director Benny Chan have created what is considered to be one of the best examples of an action romance – Hong Kong style.

One of Andy Lau’s personal favorite performance, his character of Wah Dee was voted the Most Popular Film Character in Hong Kong.

This programme is made possible by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels.
