Hoezo in KINO

With 90 minutes of cinematic (re)inventiveness, Jean-Luc Godard went from snooty Cahiers du cinéma film critic to pioneering Nouvelle Vague director with À bout de souffle (1960), tearing down the rules of the medium so he could construct them anew. It was all about breaking the fourth wall, discombobulating jump cuts and letting the narrative pieces fall where they may, while relying on fresh faces like Belmondo and Seberg to usher in an new age of cool that borrowed American noir aesthetics but added thick filterless French cigs and reckless abandon, only found on a continent that established universal healthcare. With Richard Linklater’s excellent retelling of the birth of the movement screening now, it’s a treat to see this classic once again. French language with English and Dutch subtitled screenings.
