Two years after the release of The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu, Cristian Mungiu turned this emerging cinematic language towards the final years of Ceaușescu’s regime with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. With its Palme d’Or win in 2007, the film brought the Romanian New Wave to an even wider international audience and established Mungiu as one of its defining filmmakers. The themes of oppressive systems and the individuals forced to navigate them, were already present in his breakout feature, as two women seek an illegal abortion on the mean streets of 1980s Bucharest. Romanian language with English subtitles.

Storyline

Romania, 1987, in the last years of the Ceaușescu regime. Two students sharing a dormitory room, Otilia and Găbița, book a cheap hotel room and arrange to meet a man called Mr. Bebe, who has agreed to perform an illegal abortion. From the moment they arrive, nothing goes the way they planned, and Otilia finds herself carrying the weight of a day that will not end. Winner of the Palme d’Or, filmed in long unbroken takes that leave the viewer nowhere to hide.
