Hoezo in KINO

“My mama always used to tell me: ‘If you can’t find somethin’ to live for, you best find somethin’ to die for.” On September 13th it’ll be 25 years since rapper, actor and activist Tupac Amaru Shakur exited this life so very prematurely. The iconic artist would have turned 50 years old this year and to commemorate this occasion, KINO is screening his feature film debut Juice from 1992. We will also arrange for a fitting tribute of the man and his work before the film, think about interview snippets and videoclips. Followed by an introduction by filmmaker and hip hop enthusiast, Kim Kokosky Deforchaux. Juice (1992) is the hard hitting drama that kickstarted Omar Epps’ and Tupac Shakur’s acting careers but also introduced Spike Lee’s cinematographer of choice, Ernest R. Dickerson, to the director’s chair. Dickerson’s eye for the black community’s customs, fashion and lingo brings sincerity and depth to the story of four high school friends set on a path of tragedy when one of them finds a handgun.

Storyline

Four Harlem friends — Bishop (Tupac Shakur), Q (Omar Epps), Steel (Jermaine Hopkins) and Raheem (Khalil Kain) — dabble in petty crime, but they decide to go big by knocking off a convenience store. Bishop, the magnetic leader of the group, has the gun. But Q has different aspirations. He wants to be a DJ and happens to have a gig the night of the robbery. Unfortunately for him, Bishop isn’t willing to take no for answer in a game where everything’s for keeps.
