This Is America: Winter’s Bone (2010)

Hoezo in Kino

“Talking just causes witnesses, and he don’t want for any of those.” A very young Jennifer Lawrence gives a perfect breakout performance as Ree in this devastatingly bleak look at the results of Missouri’s all consuming opioid epidemic. This tight thriller portrays an all but forgotten part of the industrial heartland that at times seems to be in a post-apocalyptic state reminiscent of The Road, but the film never forgets it deals with real people, who have families and loved ones, trying to survive.
