Jiro dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni. Nearsighted from a young age and thus unable to become a pilot, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and becomes one of the world’s most innovative and accomplished airplane designers. The film chronicles much of his life, depicting key historical events including The Great Kanto earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic, and Japan’s plunge into war. Jiro meets and falls in love with Nahoko and grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjo.
It’s going to be a magical summer in KINO when on July 1st we kick off our retrospective of no less than sixteen (16!) films from the visionary and dizzyingly original Japanese animation giant, Studio Ghibli. The Ghibli films have a great range in subject matter and even genre, but certain themes return time and again in these animated stories; strong female leads, magical transformative creatures and the ever perpetuating desire to take to the skies and fly. But whichever Ghibli film you encounter, the love for the craft of hand drawn animation and the creation of fantastically immersive worlds shines through in every frame of their work, commanding the viewers inner child to take over. All films will be presented in original Japanese language with English subtitles.
