No Man’s Land: Wanda (1970)

Hoezo in Kino

The first film written, directed and acted in by a woman practically roadmapped guerilla filmmaking later popularized by the Danish Dogma bunch. Barbara Loden chose a minuscule crew of four, shooting on a lightweight 16mm camera to capture this road movie of a housewife that abandons her family for a life of petty crime on the road. It’s a bare bones look at a woman’s escape from the family life straightjacket only to discover there are precious few alternatives on the dusty roads of Pennsylvania’s coal country.
