Beware the Locals: Beverly Hills Cop (1984)

Hoezo in Kino

A wisecracking Detroit City cop follows a homicide lead to the sunny shores of upscale L.A. where he has to deal with the local culture very different from his home turf. In many ways Beverly Hills Cop is an 80’s update of the story told by In the Heat of the Night. But where Poitier’s Tibbs used his moral authority to fight the local bigotry, Eddie Murphy weaponizes his humor and street smarts to navigate the hostile environment. Besides being a great action flick with an absolute killer soundtrack, this was the first film where Murphy was the true star and his mostly improvised comedic scenes are now pop culture legend. The film will be shown as the second feature of a two-parter with the 1967 Deep South classic In the Heat of the Night.
