Berliner Geschichten: Cabaret (1972)

Hoezo in Kino

Winner of an impressive 8 Oscars, this luscious musical starring Liza Minnelli depicts the decadence and moral degradation of Weimar Berlin like few other films ever could. Set in the same period as Fritz Lang’s M (1931) but situated largely inside a grimy nightclub frequented by the bored bourgeois and Nazi officers, the film centers around a singer courted by two men she’s unable to choose between. Dazzling, daring and downright brilliant.

American performer Sally Bowles works as a cabaret singer in the Kit Kat club. At her rooming house she meets Englishman Brian Roberts, who has come to Berlin to improve his German. Despite Brian’s confusion over his sexuality, the pair become lovers, but the arrival of the wealthy and decadent playboy Maximilian von Heune complicates matters for them both. While their love triangle plays out against the background of 1931’s Berlin, the rise of the Nazi party and the collapse of the Weimar Republic are keeping the city on its edge.
