In 1988 the Japanese government drops an atomic bomb on Tokyo after ESP experiments on children go awry. In 2019, 31 years after nuking the city, Kaneda, a bike gang leader, tries to save his friend Tetsuo from a secret government project. He battles against anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader until Tetsuo’s supernatural power suddenly manifest. A final battle is fought in Tokyo Olympiad exposing the experiment’s secrets.

KINO met up with Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo and asked him a few questions when he was in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen a few months ago. If you have tickets for one of the screenings, you will treated to this interview!

On October 15th Akira (1988) will be introduced by Leiden University lecturer and writer Tom Mes. His bibliography includes works about filmmakers Shin’ya Tsukamoto and Takashi Miike. He was also co-founder of the leading Japanese cinema website He often provides audio commentary and other contributions for Blu-ray and DVD releases.
