In 1981 special effects guru Rick Baker was assigned to do the special make-up effects on Joe Dante’s The Howling, but he left the project for An American Werewolf in London, leaving his young assistant Rob Bottin to finish work on the former. Both werewolf films were released that year and both are bonafide genre classic with mind boggling special effects that still hold up, today. It was Bottin’s big break as he went on to become the best in the bizz with work on films like The Thing, Legend, Total Recall, and Se7en. Baker went on to work on classics like Videodrome, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Men in Black, The Rocketeer and Hellboy.
So this Halloween we have a great double bill that celebrates old fashioned FX and gory, over the top horror with two werewolf classics that as scary as they are well made.
